CRICKET: IPL FEVER TAKES CAPE BY STORM
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 20Twenty Cricket tournament rolled through the streets of Cape Town on 16 April. The competition, which South Africa agreed to host takes place from 18 April – 24 May.
The IPL has arrived in South Africa with promises of riches, in terms of a R1.5 billion injection into the SA economy over the next five weeks, and future stardom for a group of young South Africans. The organisers announced on 16 April that a Miss Bollywood SA would be chosen, with TV cameras scouring the crowds at matches for girls with that "elusive star quality". The winner would receive R50 000 and be flown to India and given a role in a Bollywood movie. On Friday, the IPL will unveil an R8 million donation to the Alexander Sinton High School in Athlone. "This will be a carnival of cricket," said an upbeat Lalit Modi, the IPL chief. For further information please see www.ucbsa.cricket.org.
