APARTHEID FILM WINS 16 AWARDS

Skin, a film based on a true story about the tragic life of Sandra Laing in apartheid South Africa, has won numerous awards ahead of the movie's premiere on 22 January in South Africa.
The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2009 and has since featured prominently at dozens of international film festivals, including in Los Angeles, Rio and Dubai. It has collected a total of 16 awards so far and is now in the running for Outstanding Foreign Film at the upcoming National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People Image Awards in the US. The lead actress is Sophie Okonedo, who played the role of Laing. The films deals with the impact of apartheid on ordinary people's lives and focuses on questions of identity.
The film also features local actor Tony Kgoroge, who plays the role of Laing's lover for whom she leaves her parents when tensions rise in her household.
