SOUTH AFRICA HOSTS G 20 TOURISM MINISTERS
28.02.2010
SA hosted the first meeting of tourism ministers from the Group of 20 nations from 22-26 February in Sandton, Johannesburg. The meeting discussed how tourism can best assist in the global economic recovery. Job creation, sustainability of markets and the building of an eco-friendly tourism sector were also on the agenda.
The ministers representing the G-20 countries control more than half the global travel industry, in 2008 accounting for 634-million visitors and $697bn in tourism spend. The meeting is just one of a number of tourism-related events taking place in Sandton, including the inaugural International Summit on Tourism, Sport and Mega-events.
