UPGRADED ORLANDO STADIUM GETS FIFA 2010 THUMBS UP

Originally built in 1959 but then demolished, rebuilt and reopened in November 2008, Orlando Stadium is expected to be a landmark training ground for Fifa 2010 World Cup.

Orlando Stadium was opened on May 2, 1959. It was the mecca of South African soccer for 40 years until the FNB Stadium (Soccer City) stole the limelight. At the time of its opening, Orlando Stadium seated 24 000 and was dedicated to soccer. It re-opened in November 2008 and now seats 40 000, is a "multi-use" world class stadium and complies with Fifa regulations.

The stadium is aesthetically pleasing. The security offices, new bathrooms and refreshment facilities are clearly signposted. The blue fold-up seats are reasonably comfortable and there is sufficient leg room. On the whole the stadium is a work of art, easy to navigate and comfortable. The security facilities have been upgraded and CCTV cameras have been installed, extending into the precinct. Soweto's 2010 unit have been working closely with the South African Police Service and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department since the reopening. Ambulances and police will have easy access to the field.
